The voices gathered here offer a glimpse into a special culture. Our MD students come to us with exceptional talents, but just as important are the values they bring to their education and to the community. The principles on which our College was founded continue to inspire us: the provision of opportunity, respect for all our ways of life and all our personal differences, advancing ourselves, not for the sake of our own advancement, but as part of something larger.

Solomon Wekunga
MD Program
“I knew from a young age that I wanted to become a physician. Growing up in Uganda, I saw firsthand the challenges of a health care system with limited resources. Many rural health facilities lacked both physicians and medications, leading to countless preventable deaths. That reality left a lasting impression on me and motivated me to pursue medicine.”

MD Program
“My journey to medicine was non-linear as I weaved in and out of pursuing a medical degree. Through my research experiences in global health and clinical volunteering in Philadelphia I realized the value of the medical knowledge base and the unique patient-physician connection. I ended up choosing Drexel to pursue medicine due to its commitment to community-centered work and location close to my home.”

“Growing up, I witnessed the effects of health care disparities and the importance of compassionate, community-rooted care. Drexel stood out to me because of its strong commitment to service, diversity and training future physicians to lead with both skill and empathy. The College's mission aligned closely with my values and aspirations to make a tangible difference in underserved communities.”

“I really liked our small class size and felt I was able to get to know all my classmates and our faculty well. I also appreciated how [the West Reading] campus was almost like a blank slate so we could start initiatives that we were passionate about. Now as a fourth-year student, it’s really rewarding seeing the growth of those ideas and all the new efforts that have been started.”

MD Program
“My path to medicine has been deeply influenced by both my family and personal experiences. My father has owned a pest control business for decades, where I worked part-time from a young age. During my junior year of high school, my father was involved in an accident in which he fractured his sacrum and three vertebrae in his spine. In the months that followed, I watched as rehabilitation restored his independence and shaped his recovery. This experience led me to start pursuing a career in the rehabilitation field to positively impact the lives of patients and their families as others did for my father.”

“Medical school thus far has surpassed my expectations in every way possible. Perhaps the novelty of it all hasn’t worn off yet, but I genuinely feel like I am living the dream (most days). Learning about the human body has been an absolute privilege, and I am eager to continue developing into my professional self both in the classroom and in the clinic.”

Jacob Van Parys
MD Program
“I am thoroughly enjoying medical school so far. The challenge of learning complex material is gratifying, and I love collaborating with my classmates. Although the workload can be intense, I find energy in learning about the human body and sharing that knowledge with others. I appreciate the diverse learning styles at Drexel including the ILs, TBLs, CBLs, and lab. This variety makes for a very dynamic learning experience.”

“I cannot say enough about the Drexel Pathway to Medical School program. It was extremely challenging, but the rigor of it made the transition to medical school much smoother. Not only does the material overlap with a lot of the M1 material we are currently studying, but I was able to figure out how I learn best. The support we received from faculty and alumni during Drexel Pathway to Medical School continues to be an invaluable resource now as a first-year medical student.”
