After a distinguished 33-year career at the College of Medicine and its predecessor institutions, Itzhak Fischer, PhD, is stepping down as chair of the Department of Neurobiology & Anatomy on July 1, 2024, though he will stay on as a tenured professor in the department. Dr. Fischer joined the faculty of the Medical College of Pennsylvania in 1991 from Harvard Medical School.

Last semester, the College of Medicine’s Graduate School of Biomedical Science and Professional Studies donated more than 60 microscopes and over 100 boxes of histology slides to the Total Experience Learning (TExpL) program at Albright College in Reading, Pa. TExpL instructors have already begun taking the compound microscopes to Reading School District classrooms to introduce fourth grade students to a new scientific tool.

Roughly a quarter of U.S. adults who’ve tested positive for COVID-19 report having experienced, or are currently experiencing, three or more months of COVID symptoms, such as dizziness, headache, brain fog, and/or other symptoms, according to October 2023 data from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) Household Pulse Survey. The condition is known as Post-acute sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 or “long COVID.” And among hospitalized COVID-19 patients, that number increases to roughly half.

Mauricio J. Reginato, PhD, professor, has been appointed chair of the Department of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology effective February 2, 2024. Dr. Reginato was appointed interim chair of biochemistry and molecular biology in the summer of 2021, and has been a faculty member of the College of Medicine since 2004.
