The Hedwig van Ameringen Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine® (ELAM®) program at Drexel University College of Medicine is pleased to announce the graduation of its 29th class. The graduating class included 95 ELAM fellows and 45 fellows from the Executive Leadership in Health Care (ELH) track, from a total of 92 institutions. They join a diverse alumnae community of more than 1,500 highly accomplished leaders that represent 300 medical, dental, public health and pharmacy schools from around the world.

The graduation speaker, Dr. Jill Baren (ELAM 2010), the 14th president of Lake Forest College and the first woman president in the college’s history, celebrated the class’s achievements at the W Hotel in Philadelphia, at a ceremony where the fellows were accompanied by their deans, other senior officials and national leaders.

The fellowship concluded with the capstone event, the 2024 Leaders Forum. This event, which brought together the fellows and their deans or other senior officials, featured a symposium highlighting the fellows’ Institutional Action Projects. These projects were conducted at their home institutions in coordination with their deans and other senior leadership and were designed to address an institutional or departmental need or priority.

“We are so proud of the class of 2024,” said Nancy D. Spector, MD, executive director of ELAM and ELH. “The quality and impact of their IAPs is a testament to the capability of the members of this class to enact powerful systemic change at their home institutions and beyond. They have expressed so much gratitude for the program and the impact it has already had on both their career and personal growth. We’re grateful for their focus and engagement, and for the support of their sponsors.”

ELAM’s mission is to increase the number and impact of women in senior academic leadership positions. From there, these new appointments will help change the culture of academic health organizations in becoming more accepting of different perspectives and more responsive to societal needs and expectations. ELAM, established in 1995, is the only longitudinal program in North America dedicated to preparing women for senior leadership roles in academic health science institutions. The intensive year-long fellowship encompasses executive education, personal leadership assessments and coaching, and networking and mentoring activities aimed at broadening perspectives, building new capacities and encouraging professional connections. Program assignments, both group and individual, provide opportunities for applying and exercising leadership skills in a variety of situations and settings.

ELH is targeted to rising women at the equivalent of the associate professor level who are established experts in their domain with program-level leadership, institutional-level responsibilities (operational or strategic management), and aspirations to executive-level health system roles. ELAM and ELH alumnae serve in a variety of leadership positions including department chairs, research center directors, deans, college presidents and provosts, as well as chief executives in health care and accrediting organizations.
