2021 Inductees of Medical Honor Societies Announced

The College of Medicine proudly congratulates our faculty, residents, alumni and students who have recently been inducted into Alpha Omega Alpha and the Gold Humanism Honor Societies.

Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society

This year, 64 members of the College of Medicine community were inducted into Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society’s Drexel chapter (Delta Zeta), 20 more members than in 2020. Election to Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) is an honor signifying a lasting commitment to professionalism, leadership, scholarship, research and community service. A lifelong honor, membership in the society confers recognition for a physician's dedication to the profession and art of healing.

The 2020-2021 alumni inductees are:

  • Donna Antonucci, MD, MCP ’84, a retired medical staff member of the Department of Pediatrics, Behavioral & Developmental Pediatrics at St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children
  • Kenny Banh, MD ’04, an emergency medicine physician and a volunteer assistant clinical professor of emergency medicine and faculty director of the UC Davis UC San Joaquin Valley Prime Program, and an associate professor of clinical emergency medicine and assistant dean of undergraduate medical education and student services
  • Africa Stewart, MD, MCPHU '00, the current president of Doctors Without Borders USA/Médecins Sans Frontières USA (MSF-USA)

The faculty inductees for 2021 are:

  • Maya Bass, MD, MA, an assistant professor in the Department of Family, Community & Preventive Medicine
  • Alison J. Carey, MD, an associate professor of pediatrics
  • Annette Gadegbeku, MD, an associate professor in the Department of Family, Community & Preventive Medicine, and assistant dean of community health within the Office of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion
  • Michele Kutzler, PhD, an associate dean for faculty, and an associate professor in the Departments of Medicine and Microbiology & Immunology
  • Mark B. Woodland, MS, MD, a professor and interim academic chair of the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology for Drexel University College of Medicine, chair of the Pennsylvania State Board of Medicine, and chair of the Council on Resident Education in Obstetrics and Gynecology for the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology

The resident inductees for 2021 are:

  • Jonathan Buerger, MD, an obstetrics and gynecology resident at Tower Health – Reading Hospital
  • Aswathy Cheriyan, MD, MPH, a pathology and laboratory medicine resident at Allegheny General Hospital

Gold Humanism Honor Society

The Gold Humanism Honor Society recognizes students and faculty who are exemplars of compassionate patient care and who serve as role models, mentors and leaders in medicine. Seniors are nominated for induction by their peers; faculty members are chosen by a committee of faculty and administration.

The faculty inductees, who taught College of Medicine students at their residency sites, are:

  • Thomas Cresante, DO, an assistant professor at the College of Medicine and a hospital-based specialist at Kaiser Permanente – Bay Area
  • Anthony Donato, MD, an adjunct professor at the College of Medicine and hospitalist and director of internal medicine education at Tower Health – Reading Hospital
