Organizational Approaches to Foster Clinician Well Being

Thomas Campbell, MD, clinical associate professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine at Allegheny Health Network, hosted a Wellness Grand Rounds on February 27, 2025, featuring speaker Tait Shanafelt, MD, chief wellness officer, associate dean, and Jeanie and Stewart Richie Professor of Medicine at Stanford University. Shanafelt's pioneering studies over the last 25 years are credited with helping launch the entire field of organizational efforts to promote clinician well-being. He has published over 500 peer reviewed manuscript and has served as a keynote speaker to the ACGME, AAMC, AMA and ABIM on the topic of clinician well-being. His studies in this area have also been cited by CNN, USA Today and The New York Times. In 2018, he was named by TIME Magazine as one of the 50 most influential people in health care. Clinically, Shanafelt’s focus is caring for patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL). He is an R01 funded investigator and previously served a seven-year term as a member of the National Cancer Institute (NCI) Leukemia Steering Committee.

Dr. Campbell's Grand Rounds was made possible with funding from Dean Charles Cairns and the College of Medicine’s Office of Faculty through the Wellness, Vitality and Engagement (WAVE) Grant program.

About WAVE Grants

Drexel University College of Medicine’s Office of Faculty offers grants up to $5,000 for initiatives related to wellness, vitality and engagement (WAVE). WAVE grants support faculty at all levels (instructor, assistant professor, associate professor or professor) who wish to conduct initiatives related to wellness, vitality and engagement. Of particular interest are initiatives that include cross-campus collaborations that build faculty, staff and trainee wellness, vitality and engagement in the workplace (classroom, clinical spaces, research laboratories, community, etc.). Multiple grants of up to $5,000 were awarded during the 2024-25 academic year.

WAVE Grant Application Deadline

The deadline for the application was Monday, June 3, 2024, 5 p.m. EST.

Funds will be available as of July 1, 2024. Following completion of the activity, each awardee will submit a written report and present a summary of the experience to the Drexel University College of Medicine Executive Committee of the Faculty (ECOF).

WAVE Grant Requirements

Please submit a three- to five-page typed application (not including budget) using the following outline:

  1. Detailed Description of Proposed Activity – Please provide a detailed description of the proposed project/program or activity for which you are requesting funding, including where and when the activity will occur and if appropriate, with whom you will be working.
  2. Please include your target audience/participants and how your project/program relates to faculty wellness, vitality and engagement.
  3. Include a budget of how the funds will be utilized.
  4. Detail how you will evaluate the impact of your project/program.
  5. Delineate your plan for sustaining the project/program after the initial funding ends.

A completed application should be submitted through InfoReady and will include:

  1. Typed application (described above)
  2. Applicant’s updated curriculum vitae
  3. Letter of support from the Department Chair/DME/Regional Dean indicating their support of the activity and a discussion of how it will impact the institution

Features of a strong application:

  • The application is complete - incomplete applications will not be considered
  • The proposal is well written and does not contain multiple grammatical errors
  • The proposal is focused and clearly explains the activity and how it will impact wellness, vitality and engagement
  • The proposal contains a detailed and reasonable budget. Wellness grants cannot be used to support salary or tuition
