Centro Hispano Project

Centro Hispano Project

Location: 25 N. 2nd St., Reading, PA 19601 (View Map)

Centro Hispano is a community center in Reading that provides the local Latinx community with social services, information and referrals, and safety net services. HOP students create and lead monthly educational workshops about pertinent topics such as diabetes, sleep hygiene, respiratory infections and mental health for elderly community members in both English and Spanish. In doing so, they help to promote health literacy, encourage preventive care, and empower participants to take an active role in managing their well-being while helping to bridge language barriers. Furthermore, students involved with this project are working to improve the medical Spanish of College of Medicine medical students.

Homeless Coalition Project

Homeless Coalition Project (HCP)

The Homeless Coalition Project’s mission is to increase both the number of resources immediately available to individuals experiencing homelessness as well as access to those resources in order to attend to the needs of the Reading homeless population. Their goal is to unify various organizations, providers, and the local community in order to create meaningful collaborations and conduct informative campaigns that assist in helping homeless community members connect with the resources available to them. Students maintain a needs database and perform street outreach. They are also working to create mobile shower units to provide individuals experiencing homelessness with access to basic hygiene services.

Naloxone Outreach Project

Naloxone Outreach Project

Location: Various locations in Berks County.

The Naloxone Outreach Project aims to help reduce the number of opioid-related overdoses in Berks County by increasing the amount of naloxone distributed to the area. NOP staffs information tables in areas of high need to try to increase the amount of Naloxone kits distributed within the community. Additionally, they work closely with the Berks Council on Chemical Abuse (COCA) and other community organizations to address opioid-related overdoses in Berks County. In the future, they hope to work with local health care providers to spread naloxone resources to more health clinics, universities, and local businesses in order to broaden their reach within the area.

Neurology Screening Subclinic

Location: Hope Rescue Mission, 645 N. 6th St., Reading, PA 19601 (View Map)

The HOP Neurology Screening Project offers neurological and neuromuscular exams as a subclinic of the Hope Rescue Mission Clinic. They work in collaboration with Neurology attending physicians and residents from Reading Hospital. Given that obesity is very prevalent in Berks County, they aim to screen for the many neurological complications associated with disorders caused by obesity such as diabetes and hypertension. These debilitating complications include radiculopathy, diabetic neuropathy and wounds, seizures, sciatica and neuromuscular dysfunction. The Neurology Subclinic believes that these conditions are often either missed or left untreated and by offering screening, they can identify these issues and direct patients to the care they deserve. In addition to screening, the project aims to provide resources to help manage and treat these conditions. Medical students assist with providing screenings under the supervision of physicians.
