More than one in three women in the United States have experienced intimate partner violence (IPV) and research shows that 25% of women experience this for the first time during pregnancy. The relationship between IPV and pregnancy is underdiscussed and under addressed in health care. Studies show that intimate partner homicide accounts for mortality burden at least as high as any obstetric causes of maternal mortality. With such profound risks to maternal health, this academic paper works to highlight the physiologic effects that IPV has on maternal-fetal outcomes and offer educational resources to empower practitioners to address IPV in the clinical setting.
