With guidance and supervision from the clinic director, students appear in immigration court, handle appeals in the federal circuit courts and before administrative appeals boards and represent clients in asylum proceedings and other immigration matters.

Help Achieve Better Outcomes for Children

The Child Advocacy Field Clinic, offered in partnership with the Child Advocacy Unit (CAU) of the Defender Association of Philadelphia, gives students the opportunity to provide holistic representation for children and youth in Philadelphia Dependency Court. Guided by attorneys in the CAU, students counsel clients, draft motions, and appear in court, while collaborating closely with social workers and peer advocates. The clinic highlights how larger forces like poverty and racism affect children and families in the dependency system.

The Civil Litigation Field Clinic, which operates in tandem with the Family Law Unit of Philadelphia Legal Assistance, allows students to engage in a broad array of activities, including representing survivors of family violence in protection from abuse and custody matters. Students handle a case from the initial intake through representation and will act as the clients lead counsel.

Federal Reentry Field Clinic

Assist People with Legal Matters During Reentry

The Federal Reentry Field Clinic, which supports the Supervision to Aid Reentry (STAR) Program, also known as Federal Reentry Court, allows students to represent individuals returning to the community after incarceration. Students appear in court and advocate for clients on legal issues that often arise during reentry. These matters may include seeking waivers of court costs and fines, restoring driving privileges, challenging traffic citations, addressing default judgments entered during incarceration, resolving debt, and handling family or housing disputes.

Richard H. Frankel

Associate Dean of Experiential Learning Programs

Professor Frankel has extensive experience both as an appellate advocate and as a clinical teacher. He served as a teaching fellow and supervising attorney for the Georgetown University Law Center's Appellate Litigation Program. Previously, he was the Goldberg-Deitzler Fellow for Trial Lawyers for Public Justice in Washington, D.C.
