SharePoint 2013 to Office 365 Transition
What is happening?
Drexel IT is planning to migrate sites from the College of Medicine’s on-premise SharePoint 2013 system to SharePoint Online.
Why is this happening?
SharePoint Online extends the Office 365 experience. Benefits also include frequent updates including new features by Microsoft, and the stability of the Cloud environment including no more monthly maintenance outage.
When is this happening? How long will SharePoint 2013 be around?
The transition has already begun, and many people are already using components of Office 365 in place of their old SharePoint sites. If you'd like to learn more about the new options that are available, we recommend that you attend one of our upcoming SharePoint & Office 365 Workshops.
We hope to complete this process by December 2018. The SharePoint Support Team is working to communicate this information to SharePoint Site Owners, but if you know you have content that needs to be archived or migrated, please feel free to contact them at sharepointsupport@drexel.edu.
What if Drexel IT developed an application that reads/writes to SharePoint?
All Drexel IT developed applications for the College of Medicine, include internet facing websites, will be modified to work with SharePoint Online.
What do I need to do to prepare?
First, we recommend that you take stock of what you have in SharePoint 2010. Specifically, identify contents and processes that need to be migrated or recreated in Office 365.
Next, you should make the time to attend one of our upcoming SharePoint & Office 365 Workshops to learn more about new options available in Office 365. For example, even though you used a SharePoint site in 2013, you might be better off with an Office 365 Group or Microsoft Team since those provide functionality beyond just file storage. If you'd like to discuss your specific needs or set up a custom workshop or training for your group or department, please contact sharepointsupport@drexel.edu.
Will my existing SharePoint 2013 sites be migrated?
Possibly. Some sites may benefit from being rebuilt or redesigned in SharePoint Online rather than migrating them as-is. Drexel IT will discuss these advantages when planning your site migration.
What's changed between SharePoint 2013 and SharePoint Online in Office 365?
Please visit our SharePoint 2010/13 to Office 365 Changes page for more details about some of the differences between these systems.
