Vonage Virtual Phone

NEW BETA SERVICE
AVAILABLE TO SUPPORT BUSINESS OPERATIONS WHILE WORKING REMOTELY DURING COVID-19

The Vonage Business Communications (VBC) App is virtual phone (also known as a soft phone) that you may install on your existing mobile phone.  The app provides all the features of your traditional mobile phone. This includes its own telephone number, voice mail and SMS text messaging.  It can share your mobile phone's contacts, or create separate contacts.

Your mobile phone must be connected to a data service either Wi-Fi or your mobile phone company's (3G/4G/5G) data network.  However, you can control if outgoing calls are made over the network (either WiFi or mobile phone network)  OR using your mobile voice minutes.

Incoming and Outgoing domestic calling is unlimited at no charge. No charges for voice mail or texting. Incoming voicemail (.wav files) can optionally be configured to send to your email. Other features allow you to disable voicemail,  forward you phone to other numbers and to screen phone spam.

Incoming calls will ring with a separate ringtone from your mobile phone -- and these calls can clearly be identified as coming to the VBC app's telephone number.

When you make outgoing calls, the caller name and number that is provided to the called party will be "Drexel University 215-895-2001". (Note some mobile phone providers only provide number information without name information.)  Your name and Vonage phone number will not be shown.  If you want to allow others to call your VBC virtual phone, you will need to explicitly share your Vonage phone number.  Callers dialing 215-895-2001 are connected to Drexel's Directory Service. This VBC app caller id behavior operates the same way the University's main campus phone system operates.*

Use Cases

University community members working remotely who need to make or receive phone calls as part of high volume or critical business operations can request this service.   Consult with the Drexel IT Network Operations Center to see how this app might be best integrated with your office's call center operation or your unique application.  In such a consultation, Drexel IT NOC staff will review this and other possible options that may best meet your needs -- including options to minimize expense. International calling is NOT supported; if you have such a need please call (see ordering below) for a consultation.

IMPORTANT NOTICES ABOUT THE SERVICE

  • This service may not be continued after the current work at home COVID-19 emergency is over. Ten digit public telephone numbers assigned to soft phones will not be retained.  Users must understand this when sharing their VBC phone numbers.

  • 911 EMERGENCY CALLING
WE DO NOT SUGGEST PLACING EMERGENCY CALLS FROM THE VBC APP. IN AN EMERGENCY WE RECOMMEND YOU USE YOUR HOME OR CELL PHONE TO CALL 911.

    YOU SHOULD KNOW:
When calling 911 from a VBC application running on your cell phone, the VBC app will initiate the call to 911 using your native cell phone service and native dialing platform.  In these cases, location information provided to the 911 service centers will follow the information provided by your cell phone provider. Some cell phone providers require that you update your own location information for emergency services purposes.

Drexel IT is only officially supporting the VBC app on cell phones.  However, we realize the VBC app can be installed on other platforms that do not have native cell phone service.  This is not an officially supported configuration. On these unsupported platforms, location information provided to 911 service centers  will use the service address that was provided when you ordered the service.  On these platforms be aware when you roam, address information provided to emergency call centers may not accurately represent your actual location.
