Making Philadelphia's Sidewalks Safer, One Project at a Time

Adil Arham wants to improve Philadelphia, starting with the ground people walk on. Adil is a third-year in construction management currently spending his second co-op at the Philadelphia Streets Department, improving public infrastructure like sidewalks, roads, and more.

Growing up in Bangladesh, Arham watched the development of buildings, roads, and sidewalks and got curious. The combination of technical understanding, planning, and leadership led to an academic path and a co-op organizing and managing projects from start to finish.

Arham chose Drexel’s five-year, three co-op option to maximize opportunities for hands-on experience before graduating. In a field like construction management, where timing, coordination, and on-side decision are critical, he believes real-world exposure is as important as the classroom.

“While classes teach the theory behind construction management, this job has shown me how those concepts are applied in real-world situations,” Arham said. “I have learned the importance of communication, organization, and problem-solving on active job sites, and I will bring that practical understanding back to my coursework.”

At the Streets Department, Arham is working on road and sidewalk improvement projects in the Logan Square area of the city. His role blends fieldwork with project coordination, helping the project from start to finish by making sure construction is organized, efficient, and safe for all. Beyond the technical skills, Arham’s co-op has helped him grow in areas of professionalism.

On a day-to-day basis, Arham supports project coordination efforts, reviews construction progress, and assists with tasks that keep projects running smoothly. One of the most meaningful aspects of his co-op experience has been seeing the direct impact of his work.

“I’m proud of contributing to a project that will improve sidewalks and public spaces people use every day,” he said. “It is rewarding to know that my work is helping make areas safer and more accessible. Being part of a real infrastructure project has been a valuable experience and helped me feel more confident in my role.”

Arham says his co-op with the Philly Streets Department has confirmed that he’s on the right path.

“[Co-op] has shown me that I enjoy being involved in the construction process and seeing how projects come together over time,” Arham said. “This experience has also helped me better understand my career goals and has increased my interest in working in project management or field operations in the future.”
