The College of Engineering has concluded two successful searches and appointed new department heads in the Departments of Materials Science and Engineering and Engineering Leadership and Society, effective July 1.

“These appointments reflect the strength and depth of leadership within the College,” said Kapil Dandekar, PhD, E. Warren Colehower Chair Professor and interim dean of the College of Engineering. “I’m excited to work alongside these accomplished faculty members as they guide their departments into their next chapter.”

Caroline Schauer, PhD, has been named head of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering. A Drexel faculty member since 2003, Schauer is a widely respected researcher and academic leader whose work spans sustainable materials, nanofibers and nanoyarns, and biomedical applications. She holds the Margaret C. Burns Chair in Engineering and has played a leading role in numerous initiatives at both the college and university levels. Her prior leadership roles include associate dean for faculty affairs and research, interim associate vice provost for faculty advancement, and president of the Fiber Society. She is a Fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering and has received multiple honors for mentorship and service. As department head, she will build on MSE’s strong foundation in research and teaching to position the department as a national leader in interdisciplinary research, innovation, and inclusive excellence—aligned with Drexel’s mission of civic engagement and experiential learning.

Irina Ciobanescu Husanu, PhD, has been appointed head of the Department of Engineering Leadership and Society. A Drexel alum and faculty member since 2006, Ciobanescu Husanu is recognized for her leadership in engineering education, interdisciplinary collaboration, and innovation in curriculum development. Her research focuses on microgravity combustion, renewable energy systems, and the integration of industry-aligned experiential learning into engineering education. She currently serves as Associate Clinical Professor and Director of the Engineering Technology Program, where she has led efforts to enhance the curriculum through academic-industry partnerships and the adoption of emerging technologies. Her career spans academia, government, and industry, bringing a broad and applied perspective to her leadership. As department head, she will work to elevate the department’s profile in experiential education, industry collaboration, and academic excellence.

Schauer and Ciobanescu Husanu succeed Steve May, PhD, and Christine Fiori, PhD, respectively, whose terms as department heads conclude this year.

“I want to thank Steve and Christine for their dedicated leadership,” said Dandekar. “They have each made lasting contributions to their departments and to the college, and I am deeply grateful for their service.”
