Materials Science Professors Named Among Highly Cited Researchers

Yury Gogotsi, PhD, and Michel W. Barsoum, PhD, are included on the Global Highly Cited Researchers 2020 list announced this week by the Web of Science Group, a Clarivate Analytics company that tracks scientists whose volume of published paper citations rank in the top 1% of their fields.

The list, which includes 6,167 researchers from more than 60 countries, draws on analysis conducted by bibliographic experts at the Web of Science, and underscores research influence among scientist peers throughout the world during the preceding decade.

Gogotsi, the Distinguished University and Charles T. and Ruth M. Bach Professor in Materials Science and Engineering, appeared on the list in the categories of Chemistry and Materials Science. This is the seventh year Gogotsi has appeared on the list. More than 100 papers that he has co-authored in the last decade are designated as Highly Cited by Web of Science, meaning that each paper is in the top one percent of its field.

“Many people may happen to be co-authors on a couple of good and well cited papers, but the list of Highly Cited assembled by Clarivate features researchers who produce important and well-cited papers consistently,” Gogotsi says. “This means that my research group has been consistently productive over the past decade. Since most of my publications are co-authored by my students and post-docs, this recognition is also an accolade to the quality of students and post-docs at Drexel University.”

Barsoum, Distinguished Professor in Materials Science and Engineering, was named a 2020 Highly Cited Researcher in the Materials Science category. This is Barsoum’s fourth time appearing on the list; he was also listed in the same field in 2009, 2018 and 2019.

“I am quite proud of this achievement,” Barsoum says. “To be included on such a short list is truly a testament to the hard work and dedication of the exceptional doctoral and master’s students I have had the pleasure of working with over the years. The support of my department, the College of Engineering and Drexel University was also crucial.”

Gogotsi and Barsoum are joined on the list by Drexel Materials alumnus Babak Anasori, PhD ’14, who was also named a 2020 Highly Cited Researcher in the Materials Science category. Anasori was advised by Barsoum and subsequently served until July 2019 as a post-doctoral researcher and research assistant professor with Gogotsi’s Nanomaterials Group. He is currently an assistant professor of mechanical and energy engineering at the Purdue School of Engineering and Technology, Indiana University-Purdue University.
