The Drexel University College of Engineering will host the 2019 International Annual Conference of the American Society of Engineering Management (ASEM), to be held Oct. 23 through Oct. 26 at the Sheraton University City, Philadelphia.
The conference is open to all who have an interest in engineering leadership and management topics, including students who will find multiple opportunities for networking. Panel discussions and workshops will feature CoE faculty members.
The keynote speaker is CoE alumnus Zikria Syed, MS ’89, CEO and co-founder of PatientWing, which is used by pharmaceutical companies and research sites to list and promote clinical trials online and enroll patients. Syed is one of 12 distinguished alumni serving on the College of Engineering Executive Advisory Council.
“The ASEM Conference is an excellent opportunity to network with engineering management professionals and academics, as well as a chance to review and discuss cutting-edge research in the field,” said Chris Morse, program manager for Systems Engineering & Engineering Management, which is handling details on the conference for the college. “It will feature research presentations, industry panels, and networking events.”
All attendants must register.
The research portion of the conference is presented by a combination of faculty and industry professionals covering the following domains:
- Operations and Supply Chain Management
- Leadership and Operational Management
- Systems Engineering
- Sustainability and Critical Infrastructures
- Project and Program Management
- Management of Research and Development
An industry panel on Thursday will target the transition from engineer to engineering manager and the associated challenges. This panel includes four current Drexel Faculty: Dr. John Via, Dr. Stephen Smith, Jim Breen, and Laura Hart.
The conference will also include four workshops, each presented by a Drexel faculty member:
- Systems Engineering 101 for Engineering Managers/Professor Rick Grandrino;
- Contracting 101 for Engineers/Dr. Fred Plotnick;
- Engineering Economic Evaluation & Analysis/Dr. Stephen Smith;
- Systems Science for Engineering Managers: Theoretical Foundations for Designing Enduring Organizations/Dr. Carlo Ciliberti.
Finally, the conference includes a Student Case Study Competition, in which students will work in teams to address a series of engineering management challenges. The competition provides the opportunity for business, government, and academic professional members to meet and talk with up-and-coming engineering management students. Participants will present to ASEM leadership at the end of the conference.
Pre-conference workshops and tours will be held Wednesday, Oct. 23 starting at 9 a.m. Technical presentations are Thursday 8 a.m. through Sat at noon.
