At its November 17th meeting, the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences elected Distinguished Professor Michel Barsoum as a Foreign Member. Founded in 1919, this organization is the world´s oldest academy of engineering sciences. The Swedish and foreign fellows, approximately 1000 and 300 in number respectively, are assigned to one of twelve divisions that focus on various areas of engineering and economics. Professor Barsoum and his MAX/MXene Research Group were the first to synthesize MXenes, a new family of atomically thin, two-dimensional (2D) transition metal carbides, nitrides, and carbonitrides. These materials have enormous potential in application areas such as energy storage devices, transparent conductive coatings, chemical catalysts, composite reinforcements, and lubricants, among others
