Drexel University College of Computing & Informatics (CCI) is pleased to announce that Professor Denise Agosto, PhD has received a 2022 Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program award in information science for the 2022-23 academic year from the U.S. Department of State and the Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board.
Agosto is among over 800 U.S. citizens who will conduct research and/or teach abroad for the 2022-2023 academic year through the Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program. Fulbrighters engage in cutting-edge research and expand their professional networks, often continuing research collaborations started abroad and laying the groundwork for forging future partnerships between institutions. Upon returning to their home countries, institutions, labs, and classrooms, they share their stories and often become active supporters of international exchange, inviting foreign scholars to campus and encouraging colleagues and students to go abroad. As Fulbright scholar alumni, their careers are enriched by joining a network of thousands of esteemed scholars, many of whom are leaders in their fields. Fulbright alumni include 61 Nobel Prize laureates, 89 Pulitzer Prize recipients, and 40 who have served as a head of state or government.
Agosto will research at the School of Information Science at the Federal University of Minas Gerais, as part of a project to study information sharing, misinformation, and disinformation among Brazilian college students. As in many countries, young people in Brazil who use the internet often encounter inaccurate, misleading, or biased information. Agosto’s collaborative project, titled “Somos Brasil,” will use qualitative research methods to build detailed portrayals of Brazilian college students’ experiences in sharing information online. The project will examine what happens when the students encounter misinformation and study the impact of cultural context on information use and sharing.
“Dr. Agosto’s selection as a Fulbright Scholar is reflective of her standing as one of our nation’s top researchers in the information science field,” said CCI Dean and Isaac L. As a Fulbright Scholar, Agosto will share knowledge and foster meaningful connections across communities in the United States and Brazil.

In the United States, the Institute of International Education supports the implementation of the Fulbright US Student and Scholar Programs on behalf of the US Department of State, including conducting an annual competition for the scholarships.
