Drexel’s College of Computing & Informatics announces new faculty appointments to lead Research and Academic Affairs efforts at the College, effective July 1, 2020.
CCI Professor Ali Shokoufandeh, PhD is appointed to the position of Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and Operations. Shoukoufandeh previously served as the Senior Associate Dean for Research and Operations.
In his new role, Shokoufandeh will work closely with the College’s leadership team, faculty and professional staff, and will oversee CCI academic programs at both undergraduate and graduate levels, including program development and management, advising and student success, accreditation, program review and compliance, data collection and analysis, enrollment management and recruiting, and partnership development and relationship management. In addition, he will continue to administer College operations, including faculty affairs, space and facility, technology, and infrastructure.
Since 2015, Shokoufandeh has led the development and execution of CCI’s research strategy, extramural funding, pre- and post-award support, management and compliance, project and proposal development, internal and external partnerships, as well as faculty affairs, College operations, facility management and operations, technology and infrastructure.
“As COVID-19 pandemic has changes the higher education landscape in the U.S., Dr. Shokoufandeh’s role will become even more critical,” said Isaac L. Auerbach Professor and Dean Yi Deng, PhD. “I look forward to working with him closely to drive continued innovation of our academic programs, our sustained and strategic enrollment growth, and the effectiveness of our College’s operations.”
The College is pleased to announce the appointment of Ellen Bass, PhD as Interim Senior Associate Dean for Research for CCI.
In this role, Bass will be responsible for leading and overseeing all aspects of CCI’s research enterprise, including the policy, practice and initiatives to advance the College’s research mission and productivity. Her responsibilities will include leading, managing and/or coordinating CCI’s research support functions, implementation of CCI’s research and funding strategy, particularly in large-scale and high-impact projects or initiatives. Bass will also manage CCI’s internal partnerships with other colleges and schools at Drexel, as well as external partnerships with industry and government agencies.
“Dr. Bass is an accomplished researcher and faculty leader,” said Deng. “Given her experience and accomplishments, and her knowledge of CCI and Drexel, Ellen is well positioned to take on her new role as the Interim Senior Associate Dean for Research to help drive our college’s research mission forward.”
Bass serves as Professor of Information Science with joint appointment in the College of Nursing and Health Professions (CNHP). She previously served as head of CCI’s Information Science Department and is the chair of the Department of Health Systems and Sciences Research in CNHP. She has served as the PI or Co-PI for over $160 million in funded research centers and projects from Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), National Science Foundation (NSF), National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), and other agencies. Bass is a fellow of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society and serves on the executive council. She is a senior member of IEEE and the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics. She has published over 100 peer-reviewed publications and contributed to four National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine reports. She is the founding Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE Transactions on Human-machine Systems and serves on editorial board of several other journals. She recently served as a member of the Board on Human-Systems Integration of the U.S. National Academies.
