As Drexel University begins the 2014-2015 academic year today, approximately 225 students will begin classes at College of Computing & Informatics (CCI) as the College’s first freshman class. The new College will also welcome hundreds of returning undergraduate and graduate students.
The College, founded in 2013 by Dean
David E. Fenske, serves as a hub for multi-disciplinary computing and informatics activities by uniting the faculty, professional staff, and students from the former College of Information Science and Technology (the iSchool), the Department of Computer Science in the College of Engineering and the Department of Computing and Security Technology in Goodwin College of Professional Studies.
CCI’s new freshman class encompasses the full range of CCI’s undergraduate majors including computer science, informatics, information technology, information systems and software engineering. Thirteen percent of this year’s freshmen class are female and 87 percent are male. “This year’s class is the largest and most diverse and we expect they will make their presence known at Drexel,” said CCI Director of Advising
Kate Maguire Cusimano.
As the freshman class begins their college career, experts predict a positive job outlook for students in computing and informatics fields. Three technology occupations ranked within the top ten of
U.S.News & World Report’s
2014 100 Best Jobs: Software Developer (1) , Computer Analyst (2) and Web Developer (9).
According to
U.S. News & World Report, “employment numbers are already high within the tech industry, but this is expected to be one of the fastest-growing fields between 2012 and 2022. When you consider this industry's high job prospects and well-paying occupations, it's easy to see why our No. 1 job overall hails from this part of the workforce.”
