Drexel University’s College of Computing & Informatics (CCI) warmly welcomes the following new faculty members:
Polly Tremoulet, PhD
Dr. Tremoulet joined CCI faculty this past spring as Associate Research Professor working with the Applied Informatics Group (AIG). Dr. Tremoulet holds over two decades of wide-ranging experience in usability and systems engineering, research and development, statistical analysis, marketing, and process improvement. She previously served as manager of the User Interfaces Group in the Informatics Laboratory at Lockheed Martin, where she also served as program manager for a number of programs, including “Interface to the Warfighter” for ONR's Large Tactical Sensor Networks program, and as Principal Investigator the DARPA Augmented Cognition Program. She holds a PhD and MS in Psychology and a Certificate in Cognitive Science from Rutgers University, an MS Operations Research from Stanford University, and a BSE in Operations Research and a Certificate in Engineering Management Systems from Princeton University.
Patrick Craven, PhD, CFHP
Dr. Craven joined CCI faculty this past spring as Assistant Research Professor working with the Applied Informatics Group (AIG). Dr. Craven is a board certified human factors applied researcher who uses an understanding of user needs to design technological systems that foster positive human-machine interaction, and evaluates designs to understand and improve their effectiveness. Previous to joining Drexel, Dr. Craven served as senior research scientist at Lockheed Martin where he provided human factors and research expertise on an array of government and R&D advanced technology development programs focused on human performance augmentation, command and control, and mobile technologies. In addition to more than five special recognition awards for outstanding performance and lasting contributions to various program efforts, Dr. Craven holds two US patents. He earned a PhD and MS in Psychology from Pennsylvania State University, an MSc in Cognitive Science from the University of Edinburgh, and a BA in Cognitive Science from Dartmouth College.
Gabriela Marcu, PhD
Dr. Marcu will join CCI this fall as Assistant Professor. Dr. Marcu’s research interests include human computer interaction, health informatics, action research, ethnography, user experience design, designing for social change and organizational information systems. She specializes in designing and developing solutions by integrating health informatics, ubiquitous computing, and human computer interaction. She is a 2013 Siebel Scholar and a 2010 recipient of a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship. She recently defended her dissertation titled “Designing for collaborative reflection” which centers on the informal collaboration that occurs in health service practices during long-term treatments, while developing and evaluating novel mobile systems that support informal information sharing, unstructured communication, and decision-making through intuition rather than protocol. In addition to earning her PhD in Human-Computer Interaction from Carnegie Mellon University this year, she also holds a BS with honors in Informatics from the University of California at Irvine.
Jane Greenberg, PhD
Dr. Greenberg will join CCI faculty this fall as Alice B. Kroeger Professor. Dr. Greenberg comes to Drexel from the School of Information and Library Science (SILS), University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where she served as professor and director of the SILS Metadata Research Center. Dr. Greenberg is also a senior scientist at the National Evolutionary Synthesis Center (NESCent) in Durham North Carolina, and a 2014 Data Fellow at the National Consortium for Data Science, where she is leading a project targeting fundamental aspects of metadata capital. She also holds a post as a senior associate researcher in Knowledge Organization in the School of Information Studies, University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee. Her research and teaching interests center on metadata, ontological engineering, and data science, with a foundation in knowledge organization and information retrieval. She is the project investigator (PI) on the Helping Interdisciplinary Vocabulary Engineering (HIVE) initiative, which dynamically integrates linked data terminologies and supports automatic indexing; and she is a co-PI of the Dryad repository for data underlying scientific published research. Dr. Greenberg holds a PhD from the University of Pittsburgh, Department of Library and Information Science, School of Information Sciences, an MS (specialization in bibliographic control) from Columbia University’s School of Library Service, and a BA (double major in political science and art history) from the University of Rochester.
Alan Murray, PhD
Dr. Murray joins the CCI faculty this fall as Professor. His research interests include geographic information science; urban, regional and natural resource planning; location modeling; spatial decision support systems; and land use decision making. He previously served as professor at School of Geographical Sciences and Urban Planning at Arizona State University, where he was also a member of the Industrial Engineering Graduate Faculty in the School of Computing, Informatics, and Decision Systems Engineering, as well as a senior sustainability scientist in the School of Sustainability. Prior to this he was Director of the Center for Urban and Regional Analysis at The Ohio State University as well as Professor in the Department of Geography. He holds PhD (Geography), Master's (Statistics and Applied Probability) and BS (Mathematics) degrees from the University of California at Santa Barbara.
Tony Grubesic, PhD
Dr. Grubesic joins the CCI faculty this fall as Professor. Beginning in 2010, Dr. Grubesic served as Associate Professor in the former College of Information Science and Technology at Drexel. His teaching and research interests are in geographic information science, regional development, health disparities, location modeling, spatial statistics, and network analysis. Dr. Grubesic holds a PhD from the Department of Geography from The Ohio State University, an MA from the Department of Geography and Planning at the University of Akron, a BS from the Department of Geography and Geology at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, and a BA from the Department of Political Science at Willamette University.
Filippos Vokolos, PhD
Dr. Vokolos joins the CCI faculty this fall as Associate Teaching Professor. His teaching and research interests include system architecture, principles of software design and construction, and verification and validation methods for the development of large software systems with strict quality requirements. Dr. Vokolos previously served as Assistant Professor and Director of Software Engineering Undergraduate and Graduate programs at Drexel University from 2002 to 2006, then joining SRI International where he has served as Technical Manager since 2006. His teaching experience includes courses in the foundations of software engineering, software verification & validation, software design, programming languages, and dependable software systems. He holds a PhD in Computer Science from Polytechnic University, an MS in Computer Science from the New Jersey Institute of Technology, and a BS in Computer Science.
Brian Stuart, PhD
Dr. Stuart joins CCI faculty this fall as Associate Teaching Professor. His research and development experience has spanned a wide variety of disciplines including, machine learning, networking, robotics, image processing, simulation, interpreters, data storage, and operating systems. Dr. Stuart previously served as a senior engineer at Coraid, a computer data storage company that provides storage solutions for cloud service providers and enterprises that are experiencing rapid, unpredictable data growth. Dr. Stuart also previously served as an adjunct instructor at the University of Memphis, where he led a research collaboration between FedEx and the University of Memphis, and authored an operating systems textbook. His teaching experience includes areas such as computer science, data communications, distributed/operating systems, accelerated computer programming, and computer graphics. He holds a PhD in Computer Science from Purdue University, an MS in Electrical Engineering from Notre Dame University, and a BS (cum laude) in Computer Science and Electrical Engineering from the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology.
