Anand R. Kumar, MD, MPH, is a therapeutic gastroenterologist and director of the Center for Digestive Health at Drexel Medicine. He specializes in performing advanced endoscopic procedures such as endoscopic ultrasound (EUS), ERCP, enteral stents and balloon enteroscopy. Dr. Kumar’s special interest lies in performing complex endoscopic procedures that can be alternative treatment options to major surgery, including the following:

  • Advanced polypectomy (removal of large and/or difficult polyps)
  • Balloon enteroscopy (Crohn's stricture dilation or retained video capsule removal)
  • Luminal stents (esophageal, gastric, duodenal, enteric or colonic)
  • Endoscopic mucosal resection of early cancers
  • Closure of mucosal and full-thickness defects and fistulae including leaking old PEG sites - endoclips, over-the-scope clips and stents
  • Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) - FNA, celiac block/neurolysis, fiducial marker placement, pancreatic pseudocysts and walled-off necrosis, pancreatic cysts, Cancer staging
  • ERCP - cholangioscopy (direct and spy), removal of large CBD stones, endoscopy and ERCP in surgically altered anatomy

Dr. Kumar is an assistant professor in the Division of Gastroenterology at Drexel University College of Medicine.

He is an active member of the ACG training committee that organizes and coordinates educational events throughout the year for gastroenterology fellows.

Research

Dr. Kumar’s research interests include management of pancreatic cysts, management of indeterminate biliary strictures, endoscopic treatment of gastric varices, assessment of quality indicators for screening colonoscopy and development or validation of experimental and innovative endoscopic techniques.

He has published original research, book chapters and commentaries in major gastroenterology and radiology journals. His research has been cited widely in gastroenterology literature. He is also a clinical reviewer for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy Journal, and served as an associate editor for ACG Case Reports Journal from 2014 to 2015.
