Research

Dr. Schulman's major research interest has been understanding the human lung mast cell and he pioneered the techniques for the first ever purification of this cell type in 1982. He has been widely regarded as an expert in human lung hypersensitivity reactions, mast cell biology, immunopharmacology of the mast cell, and airway pathophysiology. He has published over 160 peer reviewed articles, reviews, abstracts and book chapters on the mast cell and airway reactivity.

Dr. Schulman has been an established National Institutes of Health and industry-sponsored research investigator of fundamental mechanisms of human lung mast cell biology, asthma and airway disorders. He holds patents related to novel mechanisms of mast cell activation and their control. He has also been the principal investigator and co-investigator of numerous clinical studies in rhinitis, asthma and airway disorders.

Dr. Schulman lectures regionally, nationally, and internationally on mechanisms of allergy and asthma, mechanisms and control of mast cell activation, and pathophysiology and treatment of asthma and COPD.
