The College of Nursing and Health Professions hosted the Memorial Day Primer on May 21, Drexel’s NAME, welcomed attendees to the event with his bagpipes.

“The military helped me develop discipline, the joy of caring for wounded soldiers, and the importance of decorum,” said Dr. Vicki Lachman, a clinical professor in the College of Nursing and Health Professions. Dr. Lachman served as a second and then as a first lieutenant in the Army Nurse Corps between 1968 and 1971.

Art Therapy graduate student Elizabeth “Libby” Kimport won a Drexel Research Day Award for her study, The Effectiveness of Clay Work in the Reduction of State Anxiety for Adult Psychiatric Inpatients: A One Group, Pretest-Posttest Design. The purpose of Kimport’s study was to investigate the efficacy of structured creative clay work as a means of decreasing state anxiety in adult psychiatric inpatients. This is the second year in a row that Kimport has won a Research Day Award.

Jennifer Nasser, PhD, and her research team’s 2011 Drexel candy study found that “multiple characteristics of chocolate, including sugar, cocoa and the drug-like effects experienced, play a role in the desire to consume chocolate.” The research study was cited as evidence in an article about chocoholism published on Valentine’s Day, a holiday often associated with heart-shaped boxes filled with the sweet stuff.

Vicki Schwartz, an assistant clinical professor in the Nutrition Sciences Department, has been named a recipient of the 2013 Silver Dragon Society Award by the Honors and Awards Committee.
