11th Street Celebrates Gift from the Walmart Foundation

August 29, 2013

On August 20, friends of 11th Street that included alumni, community members, and Philadelphia City Council Representative William Greenlee joined together to celebrate their appreciation of a $100,000 gift made to 11th Street by The Walmart Foundation. A special plaque installed in front of the center’s teaching kitchen was unveiled that day, honoring Walmart’s support of nutrition and fitness initiatives at 11th Street.

Fitness and nutrition opportunities for 11th Street patients are already improving, thanks to Walmart Foundation’s recent gift. Upgraded fitness equipment, a large professional grade storage refrigerator, other new kitchen appliances, a shed for 11th Street’s urban garden, food, and other supplies are among the many new additions at the health center that are funded by the Foundation’s contribution.

Jason Klipa, Director of Public Affairs and Government Relations for Walmart in Pennsylvania, understands the value of nutrition and fitness education and the role that 11th Street’s programming plays in improving patient wellness. At the event on August 20, Klipa said that “nutritious food and physical activity are critical components to a healthy lifestyle. The Walmart Foundation is proud to support 11th Street Family Health Services of Drexel University and the people here who are committed to living better, healthier lives.”

Remarks were also made that day by Gloria F. Donnelly, PhD, Dean of the College of Nursing and Health Professions, and Sandy Sheller ‘04 of The Sheller Family Foundation.

Patty Gerrity, PhD, Director of 11th Street Family Health Services and Associate Dean for Community Programs at the College, said, “We know that health is about more than just treating people when they’re sick.” With the gift from the Walmart Foundation, she explained that “our patients are more empowered than ever to get healthy and stay healthy, every day of their lives.”
