Stephanie Brooks and Roberta Waite Co-Author ADHD Book Chapters

November 13, 2013

Drexel CNHP faculty Stephanie Brooks, PhD and Roberta Waite, EdD co-authored two chapters for the new book, The Distracted Couple: The Impact of ADHD on Adult Relationships (Crown House Publishing 2013). Their chapters are “Breaking the Silence: ADHD and African American Couples” and “African American Couples and ADHD: A Multilevel Approach.” ADHD has been relatively understudied in relationships and marriages, and even more so in underrepresented cultures. Brooks and Waite focus on diverse and less-recognized populations, especially African American couples facing ADHD. “Breaking the Silence: ADHD and African American Couples” was written “because there is a void in published research and extant literature about addressing attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) among African American couples,” explained Waite. “The goal of this chapter was to locate ADHD within a socio-cultural context, deconstruct the dominant discourse as it is related to African American couples, and offer a social justice perspective as a conceptual lens of understanding the problem.”
