Pulse - Summer 2019 On to the Future

We have just welcomed the medical students of the Class of 2023. The White Coat Ceremony, our initial bookend, once again took place at Verizon Hall at the Kimmel Center, this time with our incoming Dean, Charles B. Cairns, MD, presiding. This wonderful site has served for many years as the venue for the last bookend, the Commencement Ceremony. The journey now begins!

I am looking forward to a sabbatical year after I step down as Dean. I hope to sharpen my teaching skills, familiarize myself with new technologies and work towards a successful re-entry as a faculty member.

I won't have the opportunity to know the Class of 2023 the way I knew prior classes. However, I know that, like their 2019 counterparts, many are the first generation in their families to go to college or earn a professional degree. Our students come from all over the country and — following our tradition — from all kinds of racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.

Our student body presents a beautiful portrait of America today.

Several of our 2019 graduates were born outside the United States and immigrated as children or teenagers. The College of Medicine's Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences and Professional Studies includes international students and U.S. residents who are citizens of other countries. We recognize that no human-made impediment will subdue purpose, strength of spirit and the yearning for opportunity. Our student body presents a beautiful portrait of America today.

I thanked the Class of 2019 at Commencement for sharing themselves with our College and University. As alumni, they will carry our name into new places and do us proud. To the Class of 2023, I say thank you for entrusting us with your education — you are our next step into the future.
