For most high school students, summer usually means a break from the books. Not so for a handful of Julia R. Masterman High School and Central High School students chosen to participate in Mini-Med Discovery Days at Drexel University College of Medicine.

The students shadowed Drexel Medicine physicians in their Center City outpatient offices and at Hahnemann University Hospital for the past three weeks. During daylong sessions, they encountered new experiences, including observing what happens inside the operating room and accompanying the surgical team while seeing patients in the hospital. The students also had the opportunity to present their own cases while observing firsthand how the doctor/patient relationship developed.

Discovery Days is a highly competitive, three-week learning experience for high school students entering their junior or senior years and who are interested in a career in medicine. The Masterman and Central students attended Discovery Days as recipients of scholarships courtesy of the Kal and Lucille Rudman Foundation.

Discovery Days is one of several programs offered through the College of Medicine's Mini-Medical School®, including the popular Mini-Med Summer Camp® for teens. Mini-Medical School offers five distinctly different medical education programs. All programs are open to community members interested in expanding their medical knowledge.
