James B. Reilly, MD, MSHP, a professor in the Department of Medicine at Drexel University College of Medicine, serves as the senior vice president of academic affairs and as designated institutional official for graduate medical education at Allegheny Health Network in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He is the regional associate dean for Drexel University College of Medicine's regional medical campus at Allegheny. Dr. Reilly has more than 15 years of experience in medical education leadership at Penn Medicine and Allegheny. He has won several teaching awards including the Penn Pearl, the Maurice Attie Junior Faculty Teaching Award at Penn and several College of Medicine Golden Apple Awards. He is a recipient of the June Klinghoffer Educator Award, a College of Medicine lifetime achievement award that recognizes a professor who has devoted their career to promoting excellence in clinical skills education and knowledge, serving as an innovative educator, a leader and a role model for students, residents and faculty colleagues.
Research Overview
Dr. Reilly’s scholarly interests span several areas of medical education and health policy. He has conducted research in patient safety within both medical education and nephrology and published several peer-reviewed manuscripts on his work, particularly surrounding diagnostic errors and the cognitive biases that underpin them. He recently served Allegheny Health Network as a co-principal investigator in a multi-institutional collaborative to re-engineer the Systems-Based Practice competency, developing residents as Systems Citizens through the American Medical Association’s Reimagining Residency grant program.
