Global Health Education Student Experiences Sabrina Johnson

Spending four weeks with the Medical Electives program in Trujillo, Peru was an incredible and immersive Spanish language experience. Each day consisted of mornings spent in the local hospital in various specialties for each student. On OB-GYN, we rounded with the teams, spent time in triage or watched surgical cases. As a medical student, it was extremely interesting to see how hospitals in Peru operate, and to be a part of a Spanish-speaking team.

In the afternoons, we had many hours of Spanish classes including conversation, grammar classes and medical Spanish. We were able to utilize the Spanish we learned in class during our time in the hospital and during the free clinics set up every Friday.

Each student was hosted by an incredible host family who prepared us delicious, fresh food each day. On the weekends, we were able to explore the beaches close to the city, various historical sites in Trujillo or travel farther away to mountain towns to hike. One of the highlights was being able to spend time with other fourth-year medical students, residents and nurses from around the United States.

Overall, I would recommend this program to anyone looking to improve their medical Spanish skills and be immersed in a Spanish-speaking country.
