"During my international elective in Community Medicine at Sri Guru Ram Das Institute of Medical Sciences and Research in Amritsar, Punjab, India, I had the opportunity to work in urban and rural areas. I spent two weeks at an urban health center and two weeks at a rural health center. I worked with physicians, nurses, medical students, and community health workers in outpatient family medicine clinic visits, immunization clinics and family planning visits.

"The highlight of the experience was the numerous house visits that I had the opportunity to join the team on almost daily. It was a great opportunity to put my language skills to use and learn about the issues faced by families in this region of India in addition to providing them with vital health information. I was also able to partake in a didactic series that covered various health topics within community medicine, which is a field that bridges family medicine and public health. I enjoyed the four weeks I spent in Amritsar for the elective. This exposure to different cultural and health issues as well as a different health system was definitely a valuable experience."
