Global Health Education Student Experiences McKenzie Locker

DHHE (Outer Himalayas) was an absolutely incredible experience for me. Participants get to experience healthcare delivery in a lower-resource setting and learn about the healthcare system in India. The attendings were really knowledgeable and helpful in building skills for working in this type of environment. Each night there was a short student presentation about a topic relevant to the area. The trips vary each year based on clinic site availability, so some years involve more hiking or camping than others. Once students are there, everything logistically is taken care of. Transportation, lodging, and food are all set up by HHE, which makes it easy to focus on the clinical work. Because of the elevation, the temperatures vary a lot between day and night, so I recommend attendees definitely pack warmer clothes than what they think they will need. A packing list is provided, and Ravi (the director) is really responsive to questions. We never had to hike with all of our gear, and only sometimes with our personal
equipment for the day (stethoscope, mess kit, etc.). Overall, it was an amazing
experience and I would love to do it again!
