Recommendations

  • Some Mandarin proficiency (speaking) is a must. English in most hospitals is rare.
  • Avoid buying herbal medicines from the (numerous) public pharmacies; if you have a cold or diarrhea, ask someone in the hospital for a place to buy Tylenol or cipro etc.
  • For transportation, the subways are great. There's a bike sharing version of Uber with many different services (Mobike, Ofo, etc...). Sign up for one of them with a security deposit of 250rmb and you can then pick up and drop off any of their bikes anywhere for 1rmb/30 min. The Chinese version of Uber is called DiDi ChuXing.
  • The Chinese version of Google Maps is Baidu Map.
