Global Health Education Student Experiences John LeMoine

LeMoine did an M4 international elective in the emergency medicine department at Hospital de Alta Complejidad via the Medical Electives Network, Trujillo, Peru from February 3 through 28, 2025.

“I had an excellent time and was fortunate enough to learn and work alongside four other Drexel students (Mike, Jordan, Sabrina and Vicky), along with many other fun and bright individuals from programs all over America and Europe. I loved the Spanish classes and the rural health clinics on Fridays. My Spanish has greatly improved, and I have gained valuable insight into Peruvian medicine and social situations present there. I worked in the emergency department, although my experience was hampered because the Spanish was quite challenging (technical and very rapid) and the physicians were very busy, as anticipated. Other students rotated in outpatient family medicine-type clinics and had a more favorable experience, which I would recommend to other students wanting to do this rotation, regardless of the specialty they chose for residency. There was also plenty of opportunity for weekend excursions and evening dinners, which were very fun.”
