Dual Degree MD/MS Student Highlights & News

The Spirit of Inquiry: MD/MS Program Cultivates Future Clinician-Researchers
Bridging medicine and research, physician-scientists play a vital role in academic medicine and the private sector. Such contributions are more urgently needed than ever before, yet there is currently a shortage of qualified individuals to heed the call. Thankfully, medical education is responding: According to recent research, a greater number of medical students are being exposed to research opportunities today, with an increase of more than 20% between 2011 and 2020. Benjamin Sherman (M3-DUCOM) is doing his research year at Standford University School of Medicine, with Vivek P. Buch, Clinical Assistant Professor of Neurosurgery. His research topic is “Developing Connectomic Modulation of Cognitive Networks.”

Ben will be presenting a case study on an epilepsy patient at AANS this year titled “Bilateral Anterior Thalamic and Pulvinar Deep Brain Stimulation with Cortical Responsive Neurostimulation in a Patient with Medically and Surgically Refractory Epilepsy: Case Report Update.”

Ben also submitted one paper titled “Utilizing Multi-nodal Deep Brain Stimulation for Treatment of Complex Movement Disorders: Initial Case Series” to JNNP and won the young neurosurgeon clinical award at CNS 2022 for a session oral presentation of an earlier version of this paper.

Ben also has a textbook chapter coming out titled “The Brain Machine Interface” in Artificial Intelligence in Neurosurgery: Translatable Technologies and Current Advances.
