Benjamin Lloyd, MD
Program Director, Reading Hospital/Tower Health Internal Medicine Residency
The Reading Hospital/Tower Health Internal Medicine Residency program was founded in 1970 by Dr. Patrick Hildreth, the former chairman of the American Board of Internal Medicine and president of the American College of Physicians, who had the foresight to build a program to train the future physicians of this community.
About the Hospital
Reading Hospital has grown from a resource for the community into a 750-bed independent academic medical center for the region and the flagship of Tower Health’s health system. It has one of the busiest emergency departments in the state of Pennsylvania — a Level 1 trauma center serving a region of nearly 4,000,000 residents over multiple counties. There are 14 separate residency programs and six fellowship programs that now train here, including cardiology, gastroenterology, hematology/oncology, pulmonary/critical care, endocrinology and infectious disease.
Our Faculty
Our internal medicine faculty members average 16 years of clinical and educational experience with a special interest in teaching, quality improvement, care and service to our wonderful community through our Street Medicine outreach program. Our senior faculty work in close alignment with Drexel University College of Medicine and its four-year regional medical campus in West Reading, paying forward our training to the next generation.
The department’s contribution to the field includes more than 180 peer-reviewed publications with over 4,000 citations of their work as of 2025, contributing to general medical knowledge and various subspecialties through case reports, systematic reviews, database analyses and educational innovations that have been shared around the country and the world.
Curriculum
We practice cutting-edge, interprofessional team training employing human patient simulators. We help residents grow through our structured mentoring program using online portfolios, teaching change systems through novel quality improvement methods, and helping them understand disparities of care through our Street Medicine program.
Whether you have interest in exploring novel research methods through national databases, or lending a helping hand to those in need in the city, this country or around the world, if you came to make a difference, to find out what you are capable of, or find your place in the greater world of Medicine, come see what is possible!
