Thursday, July 9, 2026

4:30 PM-6:00 PM

Join us for a visit to the Asian Arts Initiative gallery in Chinatown to explore their current exhibit on the community's history of organizing and protest. Attendees will be welcomed by curator Cole Roberts for a further discussion on the specific role of youth and inter-generational organizing in Chinatown. To depart together from Bentley Hall, please meet Leah Gates in the Bentley lobby by the fireplace by 4:30. Students are responsible for their own SEPTA fare to travel to the exhibit. You are also welcome to meet us at the gallery (1219 Vine Street) at 5. Please let us know in the RSVP which you plan to do. This event is open to all; please feel free to invite and bring friends.

"The “No Arena” movement was a landmark moment for the power of everyday people organizing against displacement. On the occasion of America’s 250th Anniversary, No Arena: Making A Movement  highlights a decentralized grassroots movement that was led by people of color, serving as a model for what our democracy can be. This exhibition celebrates a movement that inspired people across the city to come together for community-led futures and against the proposed 76 Place arena development, a basketball arena proposed to be built less than one block from Chinatown. Through archival materials, audio installations, first-hand accounts of key moments, and insight into the strategies that propelled the movement, the exhibition creates a living history of No Arena that reflects the messiness and vitality of organizing and honors the thousands of supporters who built community power to defend our city. This exhibition is presented by Asian Americans United, Asian Pacific Islander Political Alliance, Philadelphia Folklore Project, and Asian Arts Initiative." Learn more at asianartsinitiative.org.
