Welcoming 1st Year MD Program Students in 2020

Located in Berks County, Pennsylvania, Drexel University College of Medicine at Tower Health is affiliated with Reading Hospital, which is a Magnet Recognized acute care facility. In 2020, Reading Hospital will become a 4-year regional campus of the College of Medicine and will begin training first-year medical students.

Reading Healthplex

Opened in 2016, this 476,000 square foot facility for comprehensive surgical and patient care provides unparalleled patient and student experiences in one of the most technologically advanced health care centers in the region.

The facility includes:

  • Operating Suites: Eighteen state-of-the-art surgical suites at 600 square feet per room provide unparalleled access to the latest technology and procedures for superior clinical outcomes. There are also three operating rooms at 400 square feet per room. An all-new OR Integrated Platform wherein voice, video, and data can be quickly and securely transmitted to in-suite multimedia devices from off-site locations as well as allow for individual procedures to be recorded.
    • Hybrid Operating Suites: Six hybrid-capable operating suites integrate state-of-the-art imaging equipment into the operating room.
    • da Vinci® robotic surgical suites, with control rooms measuring in at 1,200 square feet per room
  • Procedure Rooms: Five procedure rooms are available for patients having endoscopy, pain management, stereotactic, breast biopsy, and lithotripsy procedures. These rooms measure 350 square feet per room.
  • Level 1 Trauma Center: Our level 1 Trauma Center includes five trauma bays providing our growing community with immediate and specialized care for critically ill and injured patients.
  • Emergency Department: Reading Hospital's Emergency Department is the busiest in the state with over 133,000 visits a year.
    • 16 new emergency treatment rooms and five new trauma bays include flat screen TVs, interactive GetWellNetwork access.
    • Cardiac Decision Units (CDU): Patients with potential heart issues are initially evaluated in the Emergency Department and transferred to the CDU where patients receive advanced cardiac assessment and specialized care.
    • Psychiatric Evaluation Center: The evaluation area provides 10 private rooms and additional space for consultation with specialists for patients who are experiencing a mental health or emotional crisis.
    • CT Scanner: The ED houses an 64-slice CT scanner for advanced imaging for traumatic injuries, stroke, and other potentially life-threatening conditions.
    • Helipad
    • 16 new emergency treatment rooms and five new trauma bays include flat screen TVs, interactive GetWellNetwork access.
  • Patient Rooms: The HealthPlex features 150 total private patient rooms designed for maximum comfort and healing.
  • Healing Garden: An 88,000 square foot rooftop Healing Garden making up over 72% of the building's overall footprint is the third largest health care facility green roof in the country. The roof saves energy by providing greater insulation, while offering a therapeutic environment for patients and families.
