Generations Caregivers Program

According to a 2025 study administered by the AARP, one in every four adults is a caregiver. Of these, 94% care for adults, and one in three is under age 50.

At Drexel, we understand the sacrifices and challenges caregivers face, and that’s why we’ve partnered with Health Advocate to offer employees support from a dedicated Nurse Coach through Health Advocate’s “Generations” program.

The Generations Program, launched in 2024 by Health Advocate, is designed to support caretakers in continuing to manage the administrative, medical and emotional demands that caregiving requires. Whether you’re caring for a parent or in-law, a grandparent, aunt or uncle, sibling, adult child, or another loved one who is aging or has a disability, the Generations Program is here to support you and your family with the inevitable challenges that caregiving brings.

This benefit is available to all full-time and part-time benefits-eligible faculty and professional staff as well as their spouses/partners, dependents, parents and parents-in-law at no additional cost to the employee or their family members.

A Dedicated Nurse Coach Supports the Whole Family

The first step in the program is to receive an assessment of your loved one’s needs from a Nurse Coach on the Generations Team at Health Advocate. Your dedicated Nurse Coach will conduct a thorough intake by phone or video call to assess your loved one’s medical needs, uncover any urgent issues, create a clinical care plan and provide ongoing support through regular check-ins to monitor your loved one’s condition and to assess how they can best support you in your role as a caregiver.

Administrative and Mental/Emotional Support

Additionally, Health Advocate offers many resources to guide you through your caregiving journey, instilling confidence and peace of mind, while addressing the health and well-being of you and your loved one.

Drexel University benefits-eligible faculty and professional staff as well as their spouses/partners, dependents, parents and parents-in-law are able to use this resource, which includes ongoing access to a dedicated Nurse Coach, backed by a team of Personal Advocates with expertise in aging issues, there to help you navigate the health care system and assist with work-life balance issues, financial planning questions or other life challenges or transitions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Health Advocate’s dedicated team of Nurse Coaches are all Registered Nurses (RNs) with active, clear licenses. Each nurse brings extensive experience in areas such as case management, eldercare, palliative care, health coaching, caregiver support, patient education, and chronic disease management.

Many Nurse Coaches on the Health Advocate team hold advanced certifications, including Certified Case Manager (CCM), Certified Dementia Practitioner (CDP) and Certified Care Education Specialist (CCES), among others.

Health Advocate’s Nurse Coaches also participate in ongoing continuing education to maintain their nursing licenses and to meet Health Advocate’s requirements for professional development. This ensures that they remain current with best practices and emerging knowledge in caregiving and eldercare.

The Nurse Coach begins with a Caregiver and Care Recipient Intake and Assessment, a guided discussion about the care recipient’s health status, daily needs, safety and available supports. This assessment helps identify priorities and gaps, such as medical management, diagnosis specific concerns, medical team, home safety, emotional well-being and community resources. Based on the findings, the Nurse Coach develops a personalized care plan and coordinates additional supports, such as, but not limited to, provider locators, benefit navigation and care coordination.

Participants have access to a dedicated Nurse Coach during Health Advocate business hours, 8 a.m.-10 p.m., Monday to Friday. Caregivers connect with their Nurse Coach through scheduled appointments, chat, email, phone, video conferencing and inbound and outbound outreach. Additional support can be accessed through Health Advocate’s 24/7 general nurse line or the Health Advocate member portal.

The Nurse Coach is a virtual resource, available by phone, email, chat or video, ensuring convenient, nationwide accessibility. While the Nurse Coach does not meet in person, the program helps coordinate and implement in-person and home-based care as appropriate for each case, including referrals to home care agencies, adult day programs, assisted living and skilled providers.

The Generations Program focuses on supporting employees who are caregivers for adults, including parents, spouses or partners, in-laws and adult children who require care or supervision. While the program does not specifically focus on caregiving for young children, employees with those responsibilities can be connected to other Health Advocate resources that support families and children.

Yes, employees caring for an adult child with a disability are eligible for the Generations Program. The Nurse Coach can assist with care planning, long-term support coordination, and connecting caregivers with community programs, benefits and clinical or home-based services appropriate to their needs.
