Protection of Minors
As a community of caring, Drexel University has established the Protection of Minors and Reporting Child Abuse Policy, a formal set of requirements, guidelines and procedures, in accordance with all applicable state laws, for the protection and supervision of minors (anyone under the age of 18) who attend Drexel or take part in its programs and activities. You can review the policy in the HR section of the Drexel Policy Directory.
Under the policy, you must complete and submit the Minors Program Registration survey before the start of any program, activity, service or event involving minors, on or off campus or in a virtual setting, that is:
- sponsored by any academic, administrative or athletic department of Drexel University, or
- sponsored by non-Drexel, external entities using University facilities.
For purposes of registration only, as described in this policy, the term "Program" does not include:
- A program, activity, service or event presented by Drexel and involving only employees of Drexel, where the only Minor participants are Matriculated Students who are not dually-enrolled in a secondary school (e.g., a high school);
- Any Drexel University courses offered to and attended only by Matriculated Students who are not dually enrolled in a secondary school (e.g., a high school);
- A program, activity, service or event that requires each Minor to be accompanied by his/her parent or legal guardian (note that programs in which an adult, such as a teacher, will attend in lieu of the parent or legal guardian MUST be registered);
- A program, activity, service or event open to the general public that is not targeted strictly toward Minors (e.g., athletic events, plays, concerts, lectures and special events);
- Patient-care related activities relating to Minors.
Once submitted, your registration will go to the Protection of Minors Team (protectionofminors@drexel.edu) who will respond to you with next steps.
Protecting minors from abuse and neglect is a shared responsibility requiring collaboration among the formal child protective services system, community partners, faculty, professional staff, students and volunteers to provide local safety nets for children that may be facing challenges within our communities. Even if you are not deemed to be a mandated reporter under the law, all persons with suspicion or knowledge of child abuse are strongly encouraged to make a voluntary report of such suspected or actual child abuse.
Children of Employees and Students, and Other Members of the Community on Campus: Members of the Drexel community must consider issues of safety, disruption of operations and services, disruption to other students and employees, appropriateness, and legal liability, as well as sudden emergencies, posed by the presence of children in the workplace. Therefore, employees, students, and other members of the community are not permitted to have children on campus while also being engaged in work, classes, volunteerism, research activities, etc. Recognizing that members of the Drexel community may want to share the campus experience with their children, the University allows for children to visit campus for short periods of time (example: lunch break, picking up an item from a parent employee) as long as continually supervised by their parent or guardian and escorted in and out of buildings. Minors participating in approved minors programs are permitted on campus in the context of the program regardless of their relationship to members of the community.
