Lean Six Sigma Black Belt Certification

The Drexel Lean Six Sigma Black Belt training is a comprehensive and rigorous journey that a dedicated student can undertake to expand and hone their continuous improvement skills. Lean Six Sigma Black Belt is designed for professionals with prior Lean Six Sigma experience and whose roles include training individuals and teams, big picture problem-solving, and project leadership. 

Facilitated synchronous (live) online teaching is used to demonstrate and practice tools and skills which the student then immediately applies to a real world opportunity. Sessions are fast paced and timed to synchronize with a typical project life cycle. Throughout the Lean Six Sigma Black Belt program, you receive coaching and mentoring, both as part of the classroom group and individually, to maximize your success. Upon completion of the class, project and a final exam the you become a certified Black Belt, able to address larger and more complex challenges.

What is a Black Belt in Six Sigma?

Black Belts are leaders who have mastered project management excellence. As a Black Belt, you are able to understand roles within a team or project and are able to manage and delegate appropriately. By understanding and applying all of the methods, tools and systems within Lean Six Sigma, you can Define, Measure, Analyze Improve and Control (DMAIC) at the highest level.

Lean Six Sigma Black Belt Course Description

Throughout your training, a Master Black Belt will work with each student prior to class to assist them in defining a project; during the training to ensure project progression; and at the end of the class to close out the project and ensure certification requirements are met. Your experience in the Lean Six Sigma Black Belt course also features: 

  • Blended learning including student-paced online content in conjunction with hands-on, mentored, in-class demonstrations
  • Opportunities to apply tools to case studies and real projects
  • Ongoing coaching and mentoring to accomplish successful project results.  
  • Group exercises and interactions with other cross-industry process improvement experts
  • A robust set of Lean Six Sigma tools and approaches to accomplish exceptional ongoing continuous improvement results
  • Advanced analytical tools required for complex problem solving
  • Detailed approaches to transformational customer-driven process improvement
  • Project-based lessons—from opportunity identification, root cause analysis, identification of improvements, and solution implementation

Lean Six Sigma Black Belt Requirements

Green Belt certification is required to enroll and to understand the full scope of Black belt training. Your professional role should include working with teams, project management and process improvement. There is no degree requirement to enroll. 

Ideal Black Belt candidates have:

  • Have knowledge of a project that is a significant and viable improvement opportunity. Tools and skills developed in the class will be applied to the project to demonstrate a student’s learning.
  • Experience with continuous improvement tools and approaches, including Lean Six Sigma
  • Flexibility and drive to deliver results. A key component of the class is the student delivering a completed project while receiving ongoing support and coaching from the instructor.

How long does it take to become a Six Sigma Black Belt?

Drexel's Lean Six Sigma Black Belt is a five-month training spread out in online and in-person material. There are seven days of in-class coaching during the five months which involves group projects. The last day of class includes project presentations and an in-person final exam. The project presentations include five tollgates per project to assess progress and ensure results.

Lean Six Sigma Black Belt Exam

The Lean Six Sigma Black Belt exam is an in-person, proctored exam that consists of 150 questions. You have four hours to complete the closed-book test which includes a mix of multiple choice and true/false questions. To earn your certification, you must score 580 out of a total of 750 points (77%). The cost of the exam is included in your course fee.
