Drexel University announced the launch of the Center for Hospitality and Sport Management, reporting directly to the provost. Formerly in the Goodwin College of Professional Studies, the freestanding Center will include programs in sport management, hospitality management, culinary arts and food science. It will be headed up by Dr. Jonathan Deutsch, who previously directed Drexel’s hospitality, culinary and food science programs.

Drexel University President John A. Fry announced today that the University will create a new College of Computing and Informatics. The College will combine the strengths and assets of Drexel’s many existing undergraduate, graduate and professional computing and informatics programs. It will begin enrolling new students in the Fall of 2014.

On July 16, seven Drexel culinary students had the rare opportunity to go behind-the-scenes at the acclaimed establishment to learn the secrets of pasta-making from the master chef himself.

The family of John Gibbons, a graduate student in Drexel University’s Construction Management Master’s degree program, will receive his posthumous degree on his behalf. He passed away on October 9, 2012, at the age of 57 after a four-and-a-half-year battle with cancer. He was in the midst of completing the last course toward his MS degree.

Drexel University will celebrate its 126th commencement on its University City campus with five separate ceremonies honoring Drexel’s graduating class on June 14 and June 15. More than 5,000 students will receive a degree from Drexel this year. The ceremonies will be held at Drexel’s John A. Daskalakis Athletic Center, 33rd and Market Streets. Drexel will award 13 honorary degrees to prominent individuals distinguished in their fields.

A joint study released by Drexel University’s Sport Management Department in the Goodwin College of Professional Studies and the National College Players Association (NCPA) shows that the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) uses amateurism as a tool to deny athletes billions of dollars per year in revenue that they would otherwise receive in a fair market. The study is entitled The $6 Billion Heist: Robbing College Athletes Under the Guise of Amateurism.
