Diversity Senior Celebration Dinner
2017's Emily Ortega, Justin Okons, Kimberly Dike, Nathan Colon, Kimberly Campbell and Chiemeka Onyima.
James A. Batts, MD, an African-American physician, joined the staff of Medical College of Pennsylvania in 1979 and retired as senior attending physician and professor emeritus in the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology in 1989.
Batts had a great interest in increasing the number of underrepresented minorities in medicine, and he actively recruited and mentored minority medical students. Each year, Batts gave a party at his own expense for underrepresented students and faculty at MCP. After his death in 1992, the alumni and the Office of Diversity in Medicine continued the annual dinner.
The Office of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion carried the tradition into 2017 with the Diversity Senior Celebration Dinner, inviting guests to the Germantown Cricket Club, just as Batts did.
Keynote speaker Gregg Alleyne, MD, chief of the Division of General Obstetrics & Gynecology.
Seniors Alexis Woods and Donnie Carter (back) and Associate Dean for Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Ana Núñez, MD.
Loretta Walker, PhD, director, Drexel Pathway to Medical School program, and senior Paul Gomez.
