Mark Trombetta, MD, has been appointed academic chair of the Department of Radiologic Sciences at Drexel University College of Medicine.

Dr. Trombetta has served as interim academic chair since 2021, and he brings deep institutional knowledge and a longstanding connection to the College of Medicine, having earned his medical degree from Hahnemann University, a predecessor institution of the College of Medicine, in 1985. A professor of radiation oncology, he has been an active and valued contributor to the College through service on numerous committees, including those focused on MD program admissions, faculty appointments and faculty development.

In addition to his academic leadership, Dr. Trombetta has built a distinguished clinical career at Allegheny Health Network’s Cancer Institute. As a radiation oncologist and longtime departmental leader, he has played a key role in developing innovative treatment approaches and expanding clinical programs. He currently serves as system director of clinical programs for the Department of Oncology and leads the department’s breast cancer, cardiac radiation and brachytherapy programs.

Dr. Trombetta is also recognized nationally and internationally for advancing radiation therapies that improve outcomes while reducing treatment burden for patients. His contributions to the field include more than 70 publications, the editing of two textbooks and service on the editorial boards of six journals.

Equally notable is his commitment to research and innovation. Dr. Trombetta leads AHN’s GammaPod project, one of only four such initiatives in development worldwide. The device is designed to target breast cancers more precisely, potentially reducing treatment duration and, in some cases, eliminating the need for surgical intervention. He also established AHN’s Permanent Breast Seed Implant program, one of only two programs of its kind in the United States and one of five worldwide.
