Amy Althoff, MD, Named Academic Chief of Infectious Diseases and HIV Medicine
July 11, 2024
Amy Althoff, MD, associate professor of medicine and medical director of the Partnership Comprehensive Care Practice, has been named academic chief of the Division of Infectious Diseases and HIV Medicine, effective July 1, 2024. In this role, Dr. Althoff will be responsible for the division’s development and oversight, including its clinical, educational and research program activities.
Trained and board certified in internal medicine and infectious disease, Dr. Althoff joined Drexel in 2013 as an assistant professor, rising to associate professor and medical director of the Partnership clinic in 2020. She has proven to be a successful leader who works collaboratively across various organizations. Dr. Althoff is charged with promoting the Partnership clinic and the Division of Infectious Diseases and HIV Medicine with community providers and leaders, donors, industry, academic faculty and leadership.
As academic chief, Dr. Althoff will mentor junior faculty and fellows; support quality improvement initiatives; integrate HIV, infectious disease and primary care services at the Partnership clinic; foster clinical growth; and continue the development of clinical, translational and basic science research related to infectious diseases with other Drexel University colleges and schools, and regional partners including Jefferson Health and Thomas Jefferson University.
She will serve as a significant contributor to efforts to expand the reach and cohesiveness of the programs in infectious diseases and HIV medicine across the regional and affiliate campuses of the College. Dr. Althoff will promote the departmental priorities of interdisciplinary program development, physician-scientist career development, workforce diversity and integrated program development with affiliates.
Dr. Althoff will also continue to serve as medical director of the Partnership Comprehensive Care Practice, which celebrated its 30th anniversary of care for people with HIV in 2023, and as principal investigator for several Ryan White grants totaling over $2 million per year. She will also provide high-level oversight of the Partnership’s 340B program. Importantly, Dr. Althoff will continue to prioritize inclusion efforts among patients, faculty and staff with the goal of optimizing health outcomes and promoting a culture of safety and belonging.
Dr. Althoff has served in many leadership and administrative service capacities. Previously, she served as co-director of the Partnership’s Outreach Team and director of its Committee for Quality Improvement (CQI). Dr. Althoff became medical director in October 2020 and oversaw the stabilization and rebuilding of the Partnership in the wake of the closure of Hahnemann University Hospital and during the COVID-19 pandemic. She recruited a diverse group of providers with various training backgrounds and interests, elevated faculty and staff to leadership roles within the division and collaborated with the growing Partnership team to expand services.
Dr. Althoff led the development of a new partnership with the Division of Infectious Diseases at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital (TJUH) in January 2022 to strengthen the clinical care, education and research missions. The Partnership welcomed TJUH infectious disease fellows in July 2023; TJUH OBGYN providers continue to provide critical care to patients at the Partnership and at TJUH; and a Partnership physician sees patients on the TJUH inpatient infectious diseases consult service.
A dedicated educator, Dr. Althoff is a preceptor for the infectious disease fellows in collaboration with TJUH, the regional director of the MidAtlantic AIDS Education and Training Center, and preceptor for the Partnership’s medical student third- and fourth-year rotations. She is also a research mentor for the College of Medicine and the Dornsife School of Public Health, and she serves as the Drexel site coordinator at the Penn Center for AIDS Research. Dr. Althoff completed the Faculty Launch leadership program in December 2023 and was inducted into College’s Alpha Omega Alpha Society Chapter in March 2024.
