Verdi J. DiSesa, MD, MBA, has been named Senior Vice Dean and Chief Operating Officer of Drexel University College of Medicine, starting April 6.

In this role, Dr. DiSesa will work to optimize collaboration with the College's affiliated hospitals, including St. Christopher's Hospital for Children and Tower Health, and other organizations that are engaged in the education of students and residents. He will foster, develop and maintain relationships with affiliated hospitals and health systems on the College's behalf.

Working with Dean Cairns and senior leadership of Drexel University and the College of Medicine, he will contribute to the development, implementation and maintenance of strategies and initiatives to advance the vision and objectives of our organization. Dr. DiSesa is charged with increasing the understanding of lifetime health management, population health, and social determinants of disease as important guiding principles for clinical practice and medical education.

As Senior Vice Dean and COO, he will contribute to the conception, design and implementation of innovative educational, research, clinical projects and programs. Working collaboratively across the College of Medicine and the Drexel colleges and schools, he will develop innovative teaching and research programs that enhance the ability to measure and improve population health.

He has extensive experience in local, national and international health care settings. Most recently he was the President and CEO of Temple University Hospital, Chief Operating Officer of Temple University Health System, and Senior Vice Dean for Clinical Affairs at Temple University School of Medicine.

In addition to his administrative roles, Dr. DiSesa has been actively engaged in the practice of cardiac surgery and in the clinical instruction of residents and medical students continuously throughout his career. He has had faculty appointments at Harvard, Penn, Rush Medical College in Chicago, and Allegheny University of the Sciences (Hahnemann and MCP), as well as Temple.

Dr. DiSesa is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and completed an internship in medicine at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. He completed his residency in cardiothoracic surgery at Brigham and Women's Hospital and in cardiac surgery at Children's Hospital in Boston. He earned his MBA from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.

He has served on the boards of Health Partners, Inc., the Kynett Foundation, and the Hospital and Health System Association of Pennsylvania, and on the Lehigh University Health Systems Engineering Industry Leadership Council. Dr. DiSesa is a member of the Relative Value Scale Update Committee of the American Medical Association (RUC). He is the co-author of two books and has more than 130 publications and 17 book chapters to his credit.
