With a quick tear of an envelope, 257 Drexel University College of Medicine students know officially where the next phase of their medical careers will take them. The future doctors filled the Student Activities Center on Friday, March 20, for National Match Day 2015, when fourth-year students learn where they will begin their residency programs. It is one of the most exciting days in a young doctor’s education.

At the traditional event — celebrated on the same day at medical schools across the country — students simultaneously open sealed envelopes containing the name and location of their residency training. The event began with congratulatory remarks from Valerie Weber, MD, vice dean for educational affairs, and a champagne toast delivered by Dean Daniel V. Schidlow, MD.
According to data released by the National Resident Matching Program, half of the 600-plus new first-year positions were in the primary care specialties of family medicine, internal medicine and pediatrics. At Drexel, the top five specialties were internal medicine (55), pediatrics (29), anesthesiology (26), family medicine (23), and emergency medicine (19).
