Drexel University College of Medicine is pleased to announce that Carol F. Lippa, MD, has been appointed interim chair of the Department of Neurology. Lippa is a professor of neurology and director of the College’s Memory Disorders Program.

“This leadership position is critical to the continued success and growth of the Department of Neurology in the areas of education, research and clinical practice,” said Daniel V. Schidlow, Annenberg Dean and Senior Vice President of Medical Affairs. “Dr. Lippa’s strong academic background combined with a devotion to her patients, trainees, department and institution will serve her well in this new role.”

Lippa received her medical degree from the University of Massachusetts Medical School, where she remained for her residency and chief residency in neurology. She also completed a year of neuropathology and a fellowship in the neurobiology of aging at UMass and eventually joined the medical school faculty. Lippa came to MCP-Hahnemann, which would later become Drexel University College of Medicine, in 1996.

Lippa is board certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, and has United Council for Neurologic Subspecialties certification in geriatric neurology. She has an international reputation as a physician scientist. Her research focuses on aging, Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias. She is active in the American Academy of Neurology, co-chairing sessions at their national meetings. She has also been on several international panels establishing diagnostic criteria for dementing disorders, and is a committee member for the “Alzheimer’s Disease-Related Dementias: Research Challenges and Opportunities” meeting, which is part of the implementation of President Obama’s National Plan to Address Alzheimer’s Disease. She was nominated to be a fellow of the American Neurological Association and is a past president of the Philadelphia Neurological Society. She has published more than 130 full-length manuscripts and has been funded by the NIH, research foundations, and numerous pharmaceutical companies for her work in Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias. Lippa is also a 2004 graduate of the Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine (ELAM®) program.

Lippa has been listed in Philadelphia magazine’s Top Docs several times, and she has been in Best Doctors in America every year for the past decade. She was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society, and was recently awarded the College of Medicine’s prestigious Julian Marsh Faculty Scholar Award. She has served on multiple administrative committees for the College and is currently the chair of the Faculty Appointments and Promotions Committee.
