Drexel University College of Medicine is a proud sponsor of Anatomy/Academy – Philadelphia Nexus of Art and Science, an exciting new exhibition at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts (PAFA). Running January 27 – April 17, Anatomy/Academy is the first exhibition to focus on how Philadelphia's dynamic art and science communities collaborated to advance knowledge of the human body and transform the attitudes of the public towards mental and physical health.
The opening of Anatomy/Academy coincides with the return of Thomas Eakins' masterpiece The Gross Clinic to PAFA. The exhibition includes drawings, photographs, paintings, sculpture, and other material dating from the 18th century to today. Pieces from The Legacy Center: Archives and Special Collections at Drexel University College of Medicine are also included in the exhibition.
Discount Admission to Anatomy/Academy Through April 17
All Drexel students, staff, and faculty will receive $5 off admission throughout the run of the exhibition.
Free "Drexel Day" on Thursday, March 31
PAFA will host a "Drexel Day" on March 31 when the entire Drexel community will receive free admission to the museum and Anatomy/Academy between the hours of 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. Visitors must show their Drexel Dragon ID card to the Visitor Services staff to gain admission.
Philadelphia Doctors' Chamber Orchestra on Saturday, March 19
In homage to the Anatomy/Academy exhibition, doctors and nurses from Philadelphia's finest medical communities trade in their scalpels for bows as the Philadelphia Doctors' Chamber Orchestra comes to the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts for a special evening performance. This group will perform selected classical works, including: Brahms's Symphony No. 3, Third Movement, Bach's Double Violin Concerto, and Two Movements from Soirees Musicales of Benjamin Britten Cavalleria Rusticana of Mascagni, Stravinsky Suite for Small Orchestra, and Aria from Puccini's Tosca. They will also be joined by the Chestnut Hill Choir for a rendition of Die Fledermaus by Johann Strauss and Ave Verum by Mozart.
Come early and see the Anatomy/Academy exhibition, then stay and revel in the beautiful music created by yet another moment of intersection between art and medicine. Doors to the exhibit open 5 p.m., the concert begins at 6 p.m.
