After a national search, Drexel University College of Medicine has appointed Diane Magrane, MD to the newly created position of director of Executive Leadership Programs.

Dr. Magrane will join Drexel University College of Medicine September 11 from the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) where she has served as associate vice president for faculty development and leadership programs since 2004. At Drexel University College of Medicine, Dr. Magrane will help create new leadership and faculty development initiatives and oversee existing programs, including the school's widely respected Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine (ELAM) Program for Women. ELAM is the nation's only in-depth program focused on preparing senior women faculty at schools of medicine, dentistry and public health to move into positions of institutional leadership where they can effect positive change.

"Our search committee made a superlative choice in Dr. Magrane," said Dr. Richard V. Homan, senior vice president for health affairs and Annenberg Dean of Drexel University College of Medicine. "Her national leadership in medical education and her experience with faculty development makes her a wonderful fit to advance the College of Medicine's priorities of producing innovative curriculum and quality leadership training."

Prior to her position with the AAMC, Dr. Magrane was associate dean for medical education and professor in obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Vermont College of Medicine. She received her medical degree from the University of Iowa and completed residency training in ob/gyn at Saint Louis University Hospital in Missouri. Throughout her career, she has been actively involved in improving instruction, evaluation, and faculty development in medical education.

"As a graduate of ELAM, I have seen first-hand the caliber of programs and people at Drexel and have always been impressed by the College of Medicine's legacy and innovation. At the AAMC, Dr. Magrane was responsible for a variety of faculty development programs, including Women in Medicine, TeamWorks, and the Executive Development Seminars for Chairs and Associate Deans. In addition, she is the founding editor of Faculty Vitae, an online professional development publication for medical faculty.

A leader in women's health education and in curriculum design, Dr. Magrane is a founding member of the Alliance for Clinical Education, past chair of the Examination Committee of the Council for Resident Education in Obstetrics and Gynecology, and past president of the Association for Professors in Gynecology and Obstetrics (APGO). She is also chair of APGO's Women's Health Education Committee, where she has led educational initiatives to advance the teaching of sex and gender variation across the continuum of physician education.

Dr. Magrane has authored or co-authored more than three dozen peer-reviewed manuscripts, books, and other publications, and has given numerous presentations and workshops on topics including leadership, women's health, gender education and faculty development. She has been honored as a distinguished alumnus of the University of Iowa College of Medicine and received an APGO-Wyeth Career Achievement Award.

In appointing Dr. Magrane to the position at Drexel University College of Medicine, Dean Homan acknowledged the vision and hard work of ELAM founders Page Morahan, PhD, and Rosalyn Richman, who developed the groundbreaking and internationally acclaimed program in 1995.

Added Dr. Magrane, "I am particularly honored to take the baton for ELAM from Page Morahan and Roz Richman, who have built an internationally recognized program in women's leadership."

Dr. Magrane will join Drexel University College of Medicine September 11 on a part-time basis to transition from her role at the AAMC. She will welcome the new ELAM class on September 12, and begin full time on March 1, 2009.
