Applied Pharmacognosy: Personalizing Cannabis Dosing

Dr. Riley Kirk is a PhD trained natural product chemist, educator, and author specializing in cannabis chemistry and pharmacology. She holds a Ph.D. in Pharmaceutical Sciences from the University of Rhode Island and is the co-founder of the nonprofit organization the Network of Applied Pharmacognosy (NAP), where she leads real-world cannabis research. She is also the author of Reefer Wellness and host of the Bioactive Podcast. Dr. Kirk also serves as a Lecturer for Vermont State University where she teaches “Cannabis as Medicine – Introduction to the Chemistry and Pharmacology of Cannabis.

Dr. Miyabe Shields, PhD, is a cannabis research scientist and pharmaceutical scientist with more than 16 years of experience studying the structural biochemistry of the endocannabinoid system and medicinal value of cannabinoids. Their work sits at the intersection of natural products, cannabinoid science, pharmacognosy, and lived experience, informed by academic, industrial, and personal experience with cannabis as medicine. Miyabe received their PhD in Pharmacuetical Sciences from Northeastern University. Following their PhD, Miyabe co-founded a cannabis research startup focused on heat-transformed cannabinoids, novel extraction technologies, and the development of new approaches to understanding and working with complex cannabis chemistry. In 2023, they co-founded the Network of Applied Pharmacognosy (NAP), a research nonprofit dedicated to advancing rigorous research on natural products, exploring plant-based synergies, and bringing lived experience into the scientific process.

Dr. Riley Kirk and Dr. Miyabe Shields will discuss cannabis dosing schedules and the science behind properly and accurately dosing cannabis.
