Introduction to the Science and Lived Experience of Autism: Debunking the Empathy Myth
Monday, December 8, 2025
12:00 PM-1:00 PM
Join us in welcoming two content experts from the A.J. Drexel Autism Institute as they preview the Introduction to the Science and Lived Experience of Autism (ISLEA) program. ISLEA is designed to debunk common myths, explore recent scientific findings, and gain insight into the lived experience of autistic people. ISLEA is co-taught by instructors with research/clinical expertise and lived experience, exemplifying the principle of “Nothing about us, without us.” This hour-long Lunch & Learn on Monday, December 8, 2025, via Zoom will focus on the autistic empathy myth.
Speakers
- Matthew Lerner, PhD, Associate Professor, Leader of the Life Course Outcomes Program Area, and Director of the Social Connections and Treatment Lab, A.J. Drexel Autism Institute
- Ava Gurba, Senior Research Associate, Social Connections and Treatment Lab (SCTL), A.J. Drexel Autism Institute
Upon completion of the course, participants will be able to:
- Articulate knowledge of the longstanding presumption of “empathy” being a core challenge for autistic people.
- Demonstrate understanding of the limitations of this presumption and the ways in which current autism research has led to significant reconsideration of this belief.
- Summarize the “double empathy” theory and how it can invert traditional understanding of empathy and autism, while highlighting the centrality of the autism community.
